ABSTRACT
This thesis is a part of a higher diploma degree at Lao-Top college with the topic being “Students’ Motivations and Expectations in Learning English: A Case Study at Maha Buddha Vongsa Palouang Sangha Upper Secondary School.” The objectives of this research are:
- To find out the students’ motivations in learning English.
- To find out the students’ expectations in learning English.
The research includes five chapters, such as chapter 1: introduction, chapter 2: literature review and related research, chapter 3: methodology, chapter 4: data presentation and analysis, and chapter 5: conclusion. Questionnaires were distributed on June 22th, 2020.
In this research project, there were 143 students from Mor 7 chosen as sampling from the total students of (224 students) which consisted of 118 novices and 25 monks of Maha Buddha Vongsa Palouang Sangha Upper Secondary School. The questionnaire was translated into Lao version in order to make the students understand how to answer the questions correctly. The questionnaire forms were distributed to the students at the end of February, 2020. The research was conducted with two main purposes: (1) to find out the students’ motivations in learning English and (2) to find out the students’ expectations in learning English at Maha Buddha Vongsa Palouang Sangha Upper Secondary School.
The findings on students’ motivations in learning English are: the study fee is more reasonable than other institutions. Moreover, the teacher have been qualified with high qualifications, there are appropriate textbooks and teaching materials. One important thing is the subjects taught had no mathematics. And after graduating from the school, the students will be improving their English skills. In addition, English is an international language to communicate with people around the world. The students’ expectations in studying English are: they can find a good job more easily in the future; They can improve skills such as speaking, writing, reading, and listening, and they can communicate with foreigners easily in businesses; they will get a good job and earn high salary in the future. And the last thing is the students will have more opportunities to continue their higher or further education in the future.
